I read my first instructional poker book in the early 60's. It was by Oswald Jacoby and I've forgotten the title now but Jacoby was a noted bridge player who more than dabbled just a bit in poker. I've been a fan of poker literature for as long as I've been playing but the most beneficial written instruction I rec'd. was not in a book but on the inside back cover of a book of matches. A little old man who played where I first started playing as a callow youth wrote down the minimal starting requirements for each of the eight positions at a california lowball table. I kept that match book for some time, thinking about it and of course comitting them to memory. The next time I saw him he had to ASK me for $5. Of course I hemmed and hawed but I did give him the $5. If I had it to do over again I'd give him a thousand and take him to breakfast. It would have still been a bargain. The life so short the craft so long to learn.
I've read a lot of poker books-the one that has done me the most fiscal good in the last 5 years is Michael Cappelletti on Omaha H/L split. But none of them made me the money the matchbook did.

The only book I ever read on poker was "Green Bud and Badugi: A beginners guide" written last year by myself. Basic concept is if your faced with a game of Badugi and you are in possesion of a bag of green bud....just smoke the bud and forget the game because its feking retarded anyways.

hilarious chipraker...
I credit a lot of my tourney success to Dan Harrington and specifically HOH: VOl II (the endgame) Sick book, clarifies a lot of things and it'll make you solid.
Also have most recently read Caro's winning poker secrets, a lot more basic than what I expected but useful.
Alan Schoonmaker wrote a book called "Your own worst poker enemy" or something like that, which i bought. It was titled from a quote by Stu ungar saying he is his own worst enemy at a poker table. REallly good for helping you to become anti-tilt and handle swings. It's a mental helmet for the amazing game that is poker.

I too read the above books and agree with you. Sklansky's book put me to sleep...took me 6 months to read that one! Phil Gordon's books were indeed interesting.
My fav is Harrington on HoldEm....
