View Full Version : STANDING UP TO CANCER

Today is "National Cancer Awareness Day" - the first in the history of cancer, addressing ALL types/forms of cancer.

I live in So. California and on channel 2 the program is on right now - STAND UP TO CANCER.

As many of you know, 3-1/2 years ago my left upper lung was removed; lung cancer. I survived the first two very critical years with a 5% chance of being alive. Well, now I have a 40% chance to be alive at the 5 year mark.

I'm a fighter and psychologically I do pretty well now, but this program brought me to tears and I'm turning to my extended forum family for prayers, good vibes and good wishes. Hubby is out of town and I'm sitting here crying, which I have not done for quite a while. Its not a pity thing, I'm still scared and this show brought up all the painful memories from the beginning of the diagnosis.

Please call this number, 1-888-907-8263, and just donate even one dollar for more cancer research. The telethon has many operators taking calls. Believe it or not, even a dollar can make a difference.

I guess I'm more terrified than I want to admit and I just bury any negative thoughts.

Just writing this thread helped me.

STAND UP AND FIGHT is their theme song. Omg I'm really crying, gotta go. I'm so blessed, but yet i'm so scared. There are so many different types of cancers, it's horrible. Perhaps some of you have gone through something yourself, or it has hit someone in your family and loved ones. I will keep them in my prayers.

My friends, thank you for being here tonight. I really needed to get this out. :hearts: I will be a "Survivor" at the 5 year mark, that is why I chose this game name, to help me stay positive when I see my name on the table.

Thank you all for allowing me to express this dark side that I try to hide; I have to, to save my sanity.

Hugs to my extended forum family. Thank you just for being here :hearts:

It's amazing how absolutely terrifying the first five years after diagnosis are. In another year and half you'll finally be able to ease your mind just a bit. Then it's gets easier. Everything. Talking about it. Rereading medical reports. All of it becomes easier to digest. Not just for you but for everyone that loves you. On September 16 I will be 25 years cancer free. In 2030 I hope to come here and find that you too are 25 years free. God bless you, Linda.

It is nice to hear that some one survive cancer. It really makes me believe there is hope! I have some relatives who has past away by cancer, one is my little brother. I know what you have been going through, even if I didn't have had that thing me self. Just those feelings which appears when you get the sad news... and then the feelings without knowing if you are going to survive.. and the treat process. I am glad you survived... and I wish you can be well to that day when it is actually time... but of very high age.

At the moment I have my father on the hopital fighting against his leukeamia. I don't dare to hope too much, I know what happend to my brother... :( For that reason it feels good to hear that people can survive cancer, because it brings hope. Well, it is a different kind of cancer, but still cancer. Horrible disease!

Well, Linda, you are a winner.... no matter if you lose a tourney - you are a winner in life, and I hope you can be that to you turn 100... :)

Thanks all !!!! Today is a brand new day and reading your thougtful posts started my day out wonderfully :) I forgot what I wrote last night I was in so much distress; I had to read it again this morning. Wow did I ramble on and on or what :P Yes I'm afraid there are other cancer cells in my blood or somewhere, but I'm back on track now. We all are going to die - that is a fact. I just pray I get another 10 years at least to enjoy life, my wonderful husband, and kids :hearts:

On September 16 I will be 25 years cancer free. In 2030 I hope to come here and find that you too are 25 years free. God bless you, Linda.

Mik you are a great inspiration to me also. 25 years, wtg :) God bless you :hearts:

Just think positive.... Redirect yourself... For example just think of the great time you had today....

:D Yes you're right; yesterday's game for tense was great !!! Thanks Mimi for always knowing the right things to say, and I know your posts over the years were/are very sincere. Thanks :)

[quote=DADuhWEEwah;326424] I am 100% sure you will do better with this for yourself and others than we did in that rebuy the other night :)

ROFL, that was one for the books :P TY for your post. No more RB games for me :D

Rob, love ya :) Keep those prayers coming; thanks :)

Fritz: I'm so very sorry for the loss of your brother :( Your father will be in my prayers every night. Don't ever give up hope !!! I lost my mom 2 years ago to thyroid & lung cancer :( No matter what kind of cancer, it is a monster.

I hope this helps you a little. I have been in your position also, which is why I understand what you are going through :( My dad passed away 12 years ago from leukemia. When he was first diagnosed they said he was terminal and had maybe 1-2 months to live. Well, he lived another 5 years !!! The treatments back then were not as good as they are today for fighting leukemia. God Bless you and your family; the monster affects not just the person with the cancer, but every single person who loves them - it is devastating for everyone. God bless you and you know your father, yourself and other family members will be in my nightly prayers :hearts:

xoxoxo Thanks everyone :hearts:

You are a tough gal Linda....sometimes I feel like just saying **** on the world and be done. Then I think of family and friends....that and I just go for a walk with one of the grandsons (Caden, neefers son) and remember what it is I'm fighting for.

I lost my dad as well to cancer....he left after only 6 weeks 2 days of being diagnosed....I've made it past the first year and plan on making it right on.

Kudos to all you that have fought the big C and the ones that continue to do so.

Patience. Next months 5th Street Charity Ball might just be teaming up with another forum and donating to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Awareness Month . The price will jump a buck for this game if she happens, to raise just a tad more for the Society. ;)

And Blue.....anyone that could even joke about Cancer is a damn fool in my books, that or a punk a$$ kid that knows no better.

Great news, thanks Earl :) and you already know I still pray every single night for you also !!! I only wish lung cancer could get as much funding as breast cancer does.

However, unfortunately, there is a stigma attached that if you smoke you get it, and so in turn its like we deserve to get lung cancer. Research shows that more die from lung cancer that do not smoke, and thousands more die from lung cancer every year than breast cancer because most breast cancers are treatable - thank god for that too.

Hi to the family and God Bless you all :)

BLUE: YOU ARE ONE SICK INDIVIDUAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i heard an interesting tidbit. 80% of lab rats with lung cancer were cured with a particular antigen that is grown in a plant. This plant is injected with lung cancer cells, grows these promising antigens which are given to the rats.

The interesting part in all of this - the plant that produces these antigens is...........

TOBACCO

Irony or poetic justice?

Think maybe your complete thought should have been posted together in one statement. As it stood by itself, the buttocks statement came across rude... and everyone knows you are not rude!
;)

Anyway, 777, thanks for continuing to show the strength of character that resides inside you. You are an inspiration to people from all over the world (as this forum represents) to never surrender and to always keep up the fight. You are a shining example! May God continue to bless you, your family and the rest of us.

I did not see your 2nd post Blue until the next day. I wrote my post, hit send and shut down. Ty for clearing that up and God bless.

I didn't just have the cancer, after the surgery the nerves didn't grow back together properly, so here come more procedures over the next few years - how do you think it feels having nerve blocks in your back and nerve freezing procedures with metal rods, both without anesthesia :beaten:, and then to find out that neither procedure worked :( So I now live on pain patches, med to put me to sleep, med to wake up, etc, and it sucks. BUT I AM ALIVE !!! :)

Mik: Very interesting post hmmmm

My apologies, I spoke to soon. News from my AM is that the other forum decided to not go with this site or to partner up for the event. So I'll be taking feed back , and if enough want to do it just for the month of October I'll see what we can do.......if I don't get enough feedback, I'll gladly leave it as is .

No apology necessary Earl. I know you would do more if you could. At least the Make A Wish Foundation gets some donations. I go to Childrens' Hospital out here at Christmas and two other times during the year to bring them little games, stuffed animals, etc., and I am always amazed at the courage these small children display. I go in and talk to a few, just to say hi and I care.

They are the real heroes :) Ya, by the time I leave and get in the car, I'm crying, but at least I bring some smiles to their faces when I visit.

One trip to see those children afflicted with cancer will make anyone quite humble.

God bless you Earl and your family. In my prayers, as always :hearts:

Congrats Paj :) That is absolutely awesome:D It's stories like these that help me stay grounded.
There are many cancer survivors from all different types of cancer. Any type is still a beast!!! Lung cancer, well the prognosis is not usually very good, but I have searched and there ARE lung cancer survivors if it was caught soon enough.

Mine was caught just in time on a chest x-ray when I had the flu (size of a golf ball) That x-ray and having a doctor who just didn't push me out the door with some prescriptions literally saved my life. I had NO symptoms! I was facing death literally and my surgeon said if I did not get the flu and no chest x-ray, I would have had 3-6 months to live. :(

Many of you on the forum already know most of the details of the last 3-1/2 years. You all are my extended family; I'm so blessed.

Any new members, if you are curious and want to know more about this miraculous story PM me at any time, or just put my name in the search box and go back 3 years :)

I decided to reiterate some of the facts for our new members to the forum; perhaps others new to here are facing something devastating or involving a family member, and perhaps I can help in some small way :)

Fritz: Hope your dad is doing better; PM me if you want to chat. You and your family are still in my prayers :hearts:

Earl: You survived the most critical period ... The first year !!!!! Always in my prayers also as you know :hearts:

If you smoke, please get a chest x-ray !!! Insurance companies HAVE TO order a chest x-ray if you request it and are a smoker. A good fact to know!

Blessings, Linda :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

Wow, didn't think that was possible Paj. That's just great.

Thanks Linda. Wife and I were just talking the other day how its been right at a year and a half now. And not feeling to shabby as long as I don't get too active. ;) The throat cancer seems to be done for after the surgery to remove it last year..and I still am thankful to this day for a lot of folk online actually leading to me being able to get that surgery done. I still am amazed that I can talk with what's mighty close to what my voice was years ago.

The lungs aren't doing too bad, not getting any worse, and I consider that good. Sure is a hellava lot better the than prognosis they gave me that year and a half ago. :)

You'll always be in my thoughts and prayers as well.

Earl
