This is mainly meant for conversation purposes. No wrong answers really, just want to hear about how you guys play poker. What are your thoughts on what is a bad hand to play and what is a good hand to play. What classifies a donk. Thinks of that nature.

I will go ahead and get started on me, if you feel my thinking is wrong feel free to let me know. I loved to be critiqued.

Basically I am a all instincts player and I think in the game of poker most of it should be. I study the players that I run across the tables frequently, notice how they play certain cards, where they play them and how they played when they won certain pots with certain cards...things of that nature.

I am a loose/aggressive player I suppose. I am not the type that would play only premium cards. I am not a donk at all I don't think, but cards that I raise with or play aggressively (small sc, small pairs, small sc's for gut shots) will get someone stabbed for winning with them. I at the same time also determine how much I am having to pay in order to play these cards. I will not put all of my chips in a pot pre-flop with a 97 suited, but at the same time..if the play is cheap I will see what I can make of them. I don't feel its wrong, but many ppl have gotten upset going in with AK and I somehow pull of a 2 pair with small cards. Obviously they didn't throw in enough to keep me out, only reason i was in, but at the same time a lot of players get 1 dimensional and raise with only premium hands so as you learn this you know that even if they are going in with 2 Broadway cards, if the flop comes out small then you have a good chance of knocking them out. My thinking anyways.

I like to mix things up in other words if you haven't made that out yet. I know there are books and ppl who tell you "well you should NEVER play a hand like that". Certain situations very true, that's when it comes down to instincts and how well you know the player that should determine it.

I am not a robot and fold when I don't hit. If I go in to a pot with 78 suited and Broadway cards come out I can almost guarantee you I will play those 78's until someone proves to me that they do in fact have it. Another instincts type of play. I wont go down to the wire with them obviously...I will take the stabs when I feel I can, lay them down when i know that a bluff will only get me in trouble.

I take bad beats well mainly because I know how I play..very loose aggressive. There are times when I will take a bad beat badly though when I know I put in more chips then my opponent could afford with their type of hand and they somehow pull it off. Part of the game though so I just roll with it.

In summary:

I play smart on instincts and study my opponents. I play loose/aggressive but know when to tighten up. I keep the game mixed up by playings hands in certain situations(if i can get away with it) that most players would never dream of playing or at the least never put a player on. I still have plenty to learn, but I know I can hold my own with my style of play live/online. I haven't gotten serious about poker until here lately. I really want to see how well I do playing on a consistent basis and how well I can manage myself through the good and the bad.

Feel free to post how you play and critique! If anyone is interested I normally play all guarantees on the $11 buy in and up. I play normally around 6pm and through out the night. See ya at the tables!

I study the players I play up against and make notes. I go by instincts and play my cards not chips. So no matter what anyone bets I will call if I am going to play my hand.

I don't want to give out my style here don't want anyone to get to know my poker play too well lol

Well I understand about not wanting to give up your style...i feel safe since I can be erratic and think ppl have a hard time figuring me out. I rarely play my chips unless its getting down to the wire and I have to have something go my way to get some breathing room. Once im comfortable with my chip stack I will start loosing up and playing the cards/players I am going up against.

hey new to the forum but figured this was a good place to get post #1.

while i believe that each style has its pros and cons, i really feel like the "worst" style of play is to exactly stick to one style. sounds stupid but let me explain. if you go to a table and strictly play "loose-aggro" or "tight-agg" or whatever, you allow yourself to be figured out fairly quickly and taken advantage of. if you are not able to change strategies to different opponents, you just simply won't win money in the long run.

you see people that are successful tight players, or the successful loose players, but in reality, that specific player doesn't play that same style always. its just not a way to win no matter who you are.

sry for a rant on post 1 but i thought this was needed.

great post and i think you nailed it... its not one style more than the others, its when and how the styles are applied and how effective you are and knowing when and where to change it up! welcome to the foum btw!
