Takes to long to explain but you can look at this link....maybe someone else can explain it to you... Atmospheric pressure is the pressure at any point in the Earth's atmosphere.
who uses it to plan their day?[/QUOTE]
Well when it's cold like here in winter (eg yesterday morning it came to -41c)and you got to out, it can make a difference of life and death if not planned properly.

Since I grew up before the time of constant weather forcasts, we had a barometer. I used to check it a couple of times a day. That , plus the wind direction gave pretty decent weather forcasting.
1009 mb is fairly low. Generally implies a fairly general low pressure area with storms.

Curious to see how my poker friends are doing weatherwise around the world..
We've had a great Dec and Jan so far above normal for this time of year..We can't complain but we are having a storm coming our way in the next few days and they say on the news to get ready it will be the storm of the century for this area....
So today i've done my grocerie shopping etc and got ready to brace myself for this one...Hiberanation for a few days maybe lol...But that's ok..After it's over we'll be happy...
Just one of those obstacles we have to adjust in wintertime. Wind, Cold and snow lots of it...But some people are worst off up north...
Anyway it's 5 pm and it's -4c feels like -12c with the windchill. It will climb to -30 c and more with the windchill within the next 12 hours or so...
As long as i have my internet i'm good. lol

More rain fears in wake of floods
Hundreds of people spent a second night in evacuation centres as a huge clean-up operation continued after catastrophic floods that claimed four lives. Householders are counting the cost of the unprecedented downpours as forecasters warned Britain could be hit by more heavy rain this weekend.
Police searching for a man whose car was overwhelmed by floodwaters, confirmed they had found a body with a submerged vehicle at Bow Brook, in Pershore, Worcestershire. A search was launched for the motorist after he telephoned his wife on his mobile phone to raise the alarm.

WEATHER WATCH: Floods wreak havoc
FLOODS have brought Banbury to a standstill today.
Banbury Canal overflowed during the night down towards the river at Spiceball.
Elderly residents from flats near the canal were evacuated during the night and are staying in a school in Oxford.
There was also some evacuation from canal boats.
All trains at Banbury Train Station have been cancelled and the tracks are completely underwater.
Sharon Branton, head of retail for Chiltern Railways, said: "We're governed by the water levels and
once they have started to drop Network Rail will need to come in and to full checks on the line.
"It is unlikely that we will be running a full service tomorrow."
The Bus Station is also flooded and taped off, buses are using Bridge Street.
About three feet of water has entered Spiceball Park Sports Centre which is closed until further notice.
The Mill Arts Centre is surrounded by water and impossible to reach.
Canal Street and Lower Cherwell street are also suffering from flooding and the area between the canal and the river is underwater.
There is a lot of water in the Hanwell Fields area of Banbury.
Thames Water has advised that the Grimsbury Water Treatment works has gone down so there may be a temporary loss of water supply in the Banbury area.

This is not affecting me but it is affecting my man as he happens to live in St Kitts right now.
Hurricane Dean's powerful Category 2 winds lashed the islands of St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica on Friday as it barreled into the Caribbean Sea.
art.dean.thurs.gi.jpg
A satellite image shows Dean's progress on Thursday.
more photos »
Another storm system, remnants of Tropical Storm Erin, triggered widespread flooding in Texas that contributed to at least one death.
Dean's winds were clocked near 100 mph (160 kph) as it passes near the islands on its way across the Lesser Antilles, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida. The hurricane will strengthen during the next 24 hours, the center said.
Forecasters posted tropical storm warnings for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico -- which sit in Dean's protected path.
David Wallace, a worker at a St. Lucia bed-and-breakfast told WSVN TV in Miami, Florida, according to Reuters, that electricity has been knocked out, buildings are still standing and roofs remain intact.
"But it's devastating in terms of trees," Reuters quoted Wallace. "Almost every tree is down here."
As Dean approached, St. Lucia's two commercial airports closed Thursday night, acting Prime Minister Stephenson King told The Associated Press. Martinique's main airport was also closed, AP reported.
"We may not be spared on this occasion as it appears that we are likely to experience the worst," the AP quoted King.
At 8 a.m. ET, Dean's center was located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west-southwest of Martinique, moving west at about 23 mph (37 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters said the storm could dump as much as 10 inches of rain in some mountainous areas, which could trigger flash floods and mudslides. Storm surge flooding as high as 4 feet was also forecast, with battering waves.
Tropical storm warnings continue for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Grenada, Saba, St. Eustatius, Montserrat, Antigua, Nevis, St. Kitts, Barbuda, St. Maarten and Anguilla.
A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions, including winds of at least 39 mph, are expected within 24 hours.
A tropical storm watch was also issued for the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, which means tropical storm conditions are possible there within 36 hours.

The tidal surge has hit the Suffolk village of Dunwich, flooding properties and gardens.

Great Yarmouth storm surge
The tidal surge along the coast east coast of England is posing "extreme danger to life and property".
The Environment Agency (EA) made the warning ahead of worsening weather conditions in coastal areas of Norfolk and Suffolk and parts of Kent and Essex, where the water was due to peak.
About 500 people have been evacuated and police have contacted 7500 homes of those most at risk.
The EA is predicting the highest water levels will hit Immingham, Humberside, this morning and the East Anglian coast along the Broads coast, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
Eight severe flood warnings have been announced across those areas. Evacuations and sandbagging were under way in Great Yarmouth.
There are a further 10 flood warnings of lesser severity and 25 flood watches across the region.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn told the House of Commons a surge "of up to three metres is making its way down the North Sea, which could coincide with peak high tides".
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has chaired a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency response committee.
Sky News weather presenter Francis Wilson said: "The highest surges will hit Rotterdam Friday morning.
"But some high waves are expected at the time of spring tide, Friday morning, along the Norfolk/Suffolk coast and probably into the Essex and Kent coasts."
The EA said the Dartford Creek and Thames barriers will be closed later this morning to cope with the expected 5ft (1.5m) surge above normal sea levels.
In 1953, scores of people lost their lives to a similar tidal surge.
Flood expert Professor Colin Green told Sky News: "This is as bad, potentially, as the flood in 1953, during which we had no warning system. We want to avoid those casualties."

We went to Wisconsin after Christmas and I think it was around 20F then and I thought THAT was cold. I don't know how you guys do it. I guess I'm just used to the warmth. If it goes below 40F here, I don't even want to leave the house. One thing about the cold though, the snow and frost can be very beautiful.:)

Dangerous...I can imagine. It snowed here last year, just an inch or two and NO ONE knew how to drive in it. So many accidents. My hands were sweating and my heart pounding when I had to take my husband to work. Luckily here, it is snowing one minute and then by the afternoon it's warm and sunny. Crazy weather :P Hope it warms up for you soon!

Here in Ottawa, Ontario we got 51 cms in that one storm on Saturday. That added to the record breaking amounts we already had this year has left us with no place to put the stuff we shovel off the laneway. We have a lawn lamp post that is about 5 1/2 feet tall and the snow is now about 3 feet above the top of it. The city has finally plowed our street this morning. The forcast for this week calls for a chance of more snow :( on Tuesday and Wednesday then rain  for Thursday and Friday. What a mess that will be :beaten:!!
